button_redDRAWING SILK according to classical thought, is a result of all the major joints of the body being relaxed, loose and strung together. I quote master Kuo on this ... "MOVING ENERGY is the name of drawing silk. Among the drawing of silk motions you will invariably find OUTWARD AND INWARD DRAWING. The outward extends away from the body, and the inward comes towards the inside. From the outward and inward drawing of silk the energy of opening and closing is produced."
Drawing silk is the primary way in which moving energy is created and is the foundation of Tai Chi. In every movement of Tai Chi there is a closing and opening. In push hands the change from opening to closing is accomplished by revolving. This means at the change from inward to outward drawing of silk, the WAIST ROTATES on the back leg, the wrist turns and the back of the hand (collecting/receiving) revolves to present the palm outward. At this point one is extending outward- steping forward- and giving energy. PULLING - DRAWING SILK- starts in the fingers and ends in the heel of the foot. PUSHING - DRAWING SILK- starts in the heel and ends in the fingers. All of this action is routed through the spine and controlled by the waist. When shifting back and forth between the front and back leg in a relaxed manner, from a centered position, while arms are extended in a pushing position a pulling sensation can be felt in the palms and fingers. This is something everyone can feel. Gaining sensitivity and forging moving energy is a result of consciously drawing silk.
